Heart of Wembley Festival Celebrated Culture and Community
Udenson Caldbeck Associates is pleased to have curated the Heart of Wembley Festival, held on Saturday, 20 July, for the fourth year running. The Festival, which returned with a fun-filled afternoon to Wembley High Road, has always been a roaring success and this Saturday was no exception.
The Festival kicked off with a welcome by local resident and celebrity Shaun Wallace of television programme ‘The Chaser’, greetings from host organisation Wembley Futures and a visit from the Mayor of Brent, Cllr Ezeajughi.
With a mix of both local and professional musicians, talented dancers, and fragrant food, the Heart of Wembley Festival truly celebrated local diversity and community in Wembley Central.
The packed on-stage programme included music from Afro-funk and Highlife band Odinani, the rhythms of the Caribbean with Calypso music from Tobago Crusoe, vintage sounds of the 1940s from Swing Dance band Gentleman Tim and the Contenders, and the deep reverberating sounds of Dhol drumming from Dhol 2 Dhol.
Dance was featured throughout the Festival programme, highlighting the traditions of countries throughout the world. Festival goers were treated to the acrobatics of traditional African dancers, children showcasing Indian dance in vivid costumes, vivacious Salsa dance, the choreography of the Lindy Hopp, and traditional Caribbean dance.
Children were captivated by craft activities in the Children’s Corner, as well as magic, bubbles and hilarity from entertainer Captain Calamity. Nearly every child appeared to have had their face painted, with glitter and colours galore. The Festival market included authentic Nigerian and Spanish food, sweet treats and cakes, beauty and health products, and gorgeous jewellery and handmade bags, while the community stalls offered valuable local information and advice services.
The Festival is one of the activities by Wembley Futures, one of 150 recipient groups across the UK to be awarded funding by The Big Local. A long-term innovative programme that aims to achieve lasting change, The Big Local provides a mixture of funding, finance and support.
Francis Henry, Chair of Wembley Futures, said: “The Heart of Wembley Festival has become a hugely popular part of the summer calendar for the local community. We were thrilled to provide the Festival for the fourth year running – and hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we did.”
